Birbal was the grand vizier and most trusted adviser of the Mughal emperor Akbar. Birbal's duties at court were mostly military and administrative. He was a close friend of the emperor and was well known for his wit and wisdom.

One night, Emperor Akbar dreamed that he had lost all his teeth, except one. The next morning he invited all the astrologers of his kingdom to interpret this dream.

After a long discussion, the astrologers told Akbar that all his relatives would die before him. Akbar was very upset by this interpretation and sent them all away without any reward.

Later that day, Birbal entered the court. Akbar told Birbal his dream and asked him to interpret it. After thinking for a while Birbal replied that the Emperor would live a longer and more fulfilled life than any of his relatives. Akbar was pleased with Birbal's explanation and rewarded him handsomely.

Another time Emperor Akbar and Birbal were taking a walk in the palace gardens. It was a nice summer morning and there were many crows happily playing around the pond. Akbar decided to test Birbal's wit.

He asked Birbal how many crows there were in his kingdom. After a moment's thought, Birbal replied, "There are ninety-five thousand four hundred and sixty-three crows".

Amazed by his quick response, Akbar asked, "What if there are more?" Without hesitating Birbal replied, "If there are more crows, then some are visiting from other neighboring kingdoms". From just the banner ad I got the main frame of "artificial=bad, natural=good" and that mother nature, which would never try to harm us, is responsible for the perfect sweetness of sugar. Obviously.

I had to see what kind of spin the sugar industry is on about now so I clicked on the banner. The main page, gives a "taste comparison" of sugar versus artificial sweeteners. Sugar is natural, like a crisp apple and has been around since 200 B.C.

On the other hand, artificial sweeteners, AKA "phonies" are made by chemists (evil) and developed in the last half of the last century. How can you trust something developed in the last half of the last century? I mean, seriously, it's all so new fangled.

(Pay no attention to all the non-chemical, all natural sweeteners such as molasses, honey, Agave syrup, maple syrup or barley malt sweetener, which have no impact on the human body's glycemic index and are therefore far healthier than sugar and far less damaging for diabetics. The website does not include these in their graph.)

I don't know. Maybe I'm just overly sensitive because of my recent brush with death as a result of sugar poisoning (for which I absolutely take full responsibility as an adult with the ability to make healthy or non-healthy choices). But this reframe did kind of irritate me.

Along with the tobacco industry, the fast food industry, the dairy industry, the trans fat industry (if there is such a thing) and the meat industry, the sugar industry as of late has been savaged by bad press which of course it needs to counteract.

Whereas sugar used to be a luxury, it's now in nearly everything.

But take heart. According to www.gonaturalsugar.com, "The sugar in a bag at the store is sucrose, exactly the same as the sucrose you find in a piece of fresh fruit. Sugar is not a substitute for fruits and vegetables."

Starting 2010, it is predicted that at least one million Indians will die soon due to tobacco use. As this happens, it is tantamount to mass killing caused by the complications of tobacco intake.

In this case, what could be best measures that the Indian government can impose to reduce the number of deaths in the country among smokers?

Deterioration of the respiratory system and the prevalence of lung diseases are the primary results of too much smoking. The usual diseases contacted by the dying smokers are tuberculosis, lung cancer and heart problems.

Recently, the New England Journal of Medicine published that 900,000 deaths annually are recorded among Indian smoking patients.

Are these not enough to give caution to the Indian population to reduce smoking if not totally eradicate the habit? As the prevalence of smoking continues in New Delhi, more than the deaths among smokers, the nation's air pollution problem will climb higher.

Harvard University Professor Amartya Sen said smoking is one of the 10 risk factors causing numerous Indian deaths. As predicted in the years to come, smoking will be the culprit in 20 percent of male deaths and 5 percent in females, respectively among adults aged 30 and 69.

Bidi are the usual small cigarettes used by Indian smokers. Men who frequently use them lose six years in their life expectancy as compared to women who take away eight years for their survival. But males who habitually smoke full-sized cigarettes are anticipated to die 10 years earlier than those who don't.
